Bluehost, you would be surprised to find out how useful it is to use Bluehost as a web host

Bluehost Reviews

In this bluehost review, we will share with you the pros and cons of bluehost so that you can decide whether you should subscribe to the bluehost plan or not.

What is bluehost?

If you are unfamiliar with Bluehost and hear the name, you might be wondering what Bluehost is?

Bluehost is an American company and one of the largest web hosting services around. They are one of the leading trusted hosting providers and currently operate over two million websites worldwide.

Hurry? Get bluehost here

My team and I have been a paid Bluehost web hosting customer throughout 2018-2020.

This means that we have been monitoring the performance of their cheapest "base" shared hosting plan (both average load time and uptime) for over 2 years.

This Bluehost review relies heavily on data, as well as the overall experience with their hosting features and customer support.

In a nutshell, all Bluehost plans offer their customers 24/7 live chat, unlimited bandwidth, and five email accounts. Like many other web hosting companies, they also give their new users a free domain for the first year.

Their plans start at $ 2.50 / month and include improved security, backups, and a free SSL certificate. These help protect your blog or website.

Overall, their performance over 24 months has been good. Bluehost is clearly on top with its uptime (99.99%) and a fast load time of 405ms (0.4 seconds).

Read all the "pros" and "cons" below:

OUR VERDICT: Best overall shared hosting

SPEED: 405 ms (average from February 2018 to January 2020)

AVAILABILITY: 99.99% (average from February 2018 to January 2020)

SUPPORT: 24/7 Live Chat

APPLICATIONS: WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and some website builders

FEATURES: Unlimited bandwidth and storage, email accounts, free domain 1st year

HOSTING PLANS: shared, cloud, VPS and dedicated servers

SITE TRANSFER: Not free

PRICING: Starting at $ 2.75 / month (renewal at $ 7.99 / month)

Benefits of using Bluehost hosting

1. Best uptime - 99.99% - all year round

Availability is one of the most important aspects when choosing a web host - after all, if your site is down, your users cannot access it.

Constant availability should therefore be one of your top priorities.

After looking at 30 web hosts, our benchmark for "good" uptime is 99.93%. It might sound pretty high, but it's actually even slightly below average.

Enter those numbers into a calculator and you'll quickly see that this translates to at least 26 minutes of downtime per month or just over five hours over the course of a year.

So ideally we don't want to see anything less than that.

The good news is that Bluehost easily outperforms this benchmark, putting our test site live comfortably 99.99% of the time over the past 24 months (2018–2020).

Here is the monthly breakdown for the last 12 months:

Average availability in January 2020: 100%

Average availability in December 2019: 100%

Average availability in November 2019: 100%

Average availability in October 2019: 99.96%

Average availability in September: 99.99%

Average availability in August 2019: 99.99%

Average availability in July 2019: 100%

Average availability in June 2019: 99.98%

Average availability in May 2019: 100%

Average availability in April 2019: 100%

Average availability in March 2019: 99.99%

Average availability in February 2019: 100%

Conclusion? Bluehost is one of the most trusted web hosting providers according to our uptime survey.

2. Top 5 website "load" speeds - 405 ms
A Google report from last year found that the vast majority of mobile websites are way too slow.

This is a problem for two major reasons.

Google's mobile-first index may improve or hide your site from user searches depending on its loading speed.

Studies show that slow websites almost always result in lower sales.

So, after uptime, your web host's page load times are the second most important thing that can literally make or break your site's success.

We have been tracking Bluehost's performance since January 2019 using a third-party tool, Pingdom.

And again, we were happy with the results - an average page load speed of 405ms, which places them as the 5th fastest site out of all we tested. (bluehost review).

3. Low introductory price ($ 2.50 / month)

We'll take a look at Bluehost's full pricing and plans in a moment.

However, if you were to look at the starting prices, you'll notice that the lowest advertised price is $ 3.95 / month. That's a pretty good deal considering they already allegedly cut it by $ 7.99 / month originally.

For that price, you get pretty much everything you need for a single website. This includes 50 GB SSD storage, unlimited bandwidth, free SSL certificate, etc.

So you will get very good value for money, along with their consistent uptime and page load speed.

The good news is that we were able to make a deal with Bluehost for our readers that brings the starting price down even further to $ 2.50 / month.

This is the lowest rate we've seen on the internet (and trust us, our team is spending way too much time online as it is). So this is a good deal if you are looking for a new affordable host.

4. Good security options

Even though Bluehost is one of the “cheaper” options out there, we were pleased to find that it doesn't compromise too much or skimp on critical features like security.

Bluehost provides many good security options by default, including free SSL certificate for each plan, as we mentioned before.

All plans also include a domain privacy feature that will help you keep the personal information you used to register for a domain private.

This prevents hackers from finding and using this personal information for phishing schemes to trick you or others into transmitting sensitive information.

SiteLock is included to help prevent malware attacks, which are unfortunately quite common on WordPress sites.

CodeGuard is another form of protection, which also provides daily backups so that you can restore previous versions of a site if it is hacked.

Postini, from Google, is the last security tool of note. It provides spam protection for your email so that any suspicious item cannot get into your inbox.

Overall, this is a decent enough security package to keep your site safe and sound.

5. Lots of e-commerce integrations, apps and features

Beyond the included security features, Bluehost also provides access to a large number of different apps and integrations so you can use the most popular services on the web.

For example, they have a domain manager if you prefer to just buy and manage multiple domains through them.

You can set daily, weekly, or monthly backups just in case.

You can install WordPress with just one click.

You can also install other popular content management systems (CMS) like Drupal, Joomla, run an e-commerce store, etc.

Plus, Bluehost will even include access to a content delivery network (CDN).

These house your images and large files, removing that work from your servers, delivering them to users around the world faster and keeping your site fast at the same time.

6. WordPress.org “Official” Recommended Host

WordPress is the most widely used website platform on the market.

And they only "officially" recommend three hosting partners for use with a WordPress site:

- Bluehost

- Dreamhost

- SiteGround

Of course, you can use almost any web hosting provider to build a WordPress site.

But the fact that Bluehost is one of the few officially recognized partners is encouraging.

7. Easy to use for beginners

Some of the web hosts we've seen are the best just for advanced users.

Dreamhost, for example, is great if you know what you're doing.

But they lack a user-friendly interface for non-technical people. So if you are a beginner, you will have a hard time getting a site online.

Bluehost's control panel (cPanel) layout makes it easy to use.

You just need to point and click in most cases.

It also has features for advanced users, but newbies can easily install and start WordPress as well.

Or, they can use the Bluehost website builder tools (such as Weebly or Drupal) to start with a template that you can customize by just dragging and dropping features.

8. 30 day money back guarantee

Getting the best web hosting deal usually means prepaying for a few months, a year, or several years at a time.
Bluehost is no different - more on that below.
But they do offer a 30 day money back guarantee on their plans.
You can try the service to see how well it is performing, then request a refund if you are not completely satisfied.
We do have a few words of caution, however.
Depending on their conditions, here is what does and does not fall under this guarantee:
You can only get refunds on the cost of web hosting, and not on other products like domains or other add-ons.
A fee of $ 15.99 will be deducted if you received a free domain name in your plan.
Any request after 30 days will not be refunded.
It's not exactly a no-questions-asked policy, as we've seen with some hosts.
So make sure you agree with these points before registering.

9. Customer support

Bluehost offers everything from a knowledge base to live chat, email and even phone support.
We tried the live chat and Vinutha from Bluehost was connected in two minutes.
There were slight delays between each answer, but overall Vinutha was extremely personable and offered straightforward answers to every question.
It was a painless experience, which is exactly what you would expect from a host's customer support.

Disadvantages of using Bluehost hosting

Bluehost works pretty well across the board.

However, there are two main areas where the costs are a bit high.

Let's go deeper into each of them.

1. Higher renewal rates (common in the web hosting industry)

The best way to get the lowest possible hosting price is to prepay for one, two or even three years in advance.

On the one hand, the monthly price is low, but on the other hand, the prepayment for a longer period (between 12 and 36 months) means that you are not committing just a few dollars, but a hundred dollars.

Another thing to consider is the higher renewal rates after your introductory period expires.

In this case, the three-year prepayment at $ 3.95 is a good deal because you're locking in that low rate for as long as possible.

However, at the end of this period, rates will revert to their “normal” rates.

These range from $ 7.99 to $ 8.99 / month on the most basic shared plan depending on the length of the prepayment.

2. Site migrations are not free

Some web hosts will move your existing website to their service for free.

They see it as a friendly service that helps make new customers happy, so they'll pay the fee.

Unfortunately, Bluehost does not perform free migrations.

They have a one-time fee of $ 149.99 which includes migrating up to five websites, 20 email accounts, and any other database files for those sites.

They claim it will be fast and seamless, so you won't experience any delays or interruptions.

However, the fact that you have to pay for it, and pay so much, remains a “downside” to consider.

Bluehost pricing, hosting plans and quick facts

Bluehost's basic plan will set you back $ 3.95 / month (or $ 2.50 with our discount).
The Plus plan drops to $ 4.63 / month - the same price as the Choice Plus option for unlimited websites, SSD storage, and bandwidth. They also allow you to manage an unlimited number of domains, parked domains and subdomains on these plans.
The Pro plan starts at $ 11.84 / month with all of these features and the high performance of their servers.
In addition, Bluehost offers all major types of web hosting, including VPS, cloud, and dedicated data centers.

Bluehost Reviews

Free domain? Yes for the 1st year, then renews at $ 15.99.

Easy Registration: Simple two-page registration process.

Payment methods: major credit cards and PayPal.

Costs and hidden clauses: No refund on domain names. Renewal rates for domains and hosting are increasing.

Upselling: Certain upselling. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence in the web hosting industry and it happens with many reputable hosting companies.

Account Activation: Most users get instant activation. If the information is incorrect or there is a suspicion of fraud, activation may be delayed.

Control panel and dashboard experience: Simple and easy to use control panel.

Installing Applications and CMS (WordPress, Joomla, etc.): Mojo Marketplace makes installing applications quick and easy.

Do we recommend Bluehost ?. Yes

Bluehost has been ranking at or near the top for uptime and load times for over a year.

Plus, they offer solid security support, a money-back guarantee, and plenty of user-friendly apps, all for one of the lowest prices in the industry ($ 2.50 / month).

But they are not perfect.

Renewal rates will increase after introductory pricing ends.

Additionally, they charge extra fees for site migrations, which other hosts add for free.

But overall, Bluehost offers good performance and value for money.
